Restaurant Review #18 - Cafe de Paris, Monaco

Hi everyone,

My review of food and drinks in Monaco continues with one of the most popular restaurants in the country. Monaco has many interesting restaurants but not many are better located than Cafe de Paris. The brasserie is located right next to the casino of Monte Carlo and Hotel de Paris. While its ideal location guarantees customers, it was perhaps surprising that there were seats available without prior reservation. Nevertheless I decided to try the scorpion fish that was on the daily specials.

Firstly, I must admit that the restaurant itself looked elegant, spacious and meets the high standards I have for Monaco. However, the service was not attentive as it seems that waiters did not remember their tables and thus caused delays in taking orders. The menu itself occupies a high price point but not ridiculously high. The prices are high enough that you expect the food to be of a very high quality. When my dish eventually came, the presentation was great. The dish looked very appealing and the flavours seemed to compliment each other well. Despite this, the flavours lacked depth and felt somewhat unsatisfying. Considering its location, price and fame, I expected more. The food was not bad as such, but underwhelming. I would still recommend going here if you are near the area and need something to eat. But do not set your expectations high.

While you are in Monte Carlo I would recommend going to Buddha Bar. This quirky bar does have several chains in different areas of the world but the drinks are good and the atmosphere is elegant. Certain days are busier than others, but it is certainly in your interest to check this bar out.

Price: Noticeably High
Food: Modern French
Service: Forgetful

Rating: 3/5

Fun Fact: Monaco is the second smallest country in the world behind the Vatican City.
