Restaurant Review #1 - Franco Manca Richmond

Hi everyone,

I'm sure there are some that criticise me for advocating high quality dining experiences. Nevertheless, I do also enjoy more relaxed and affordable settings, provided the food is good. One such food is pizza. Many so-called pizzerias have disappointed me in the past but Franco Manca has always been a safe choice.

I first frequented Franco Manca a few years ago when they had a small post at Brixton market. After I came back from my travels I found that the small pizzeria had expanded significantly. Franco Manca now has locations all over London and even a few locations in cities such as Oxford. I'm a big fan of their small menu; it gives the impression a specialised pizzeria. I much prefer a good 7 pizza menu than a very large mediocre one. Some of the pizzas on sale in certain restaurants have become a joke... I won't be trying a chocolate bacon pizza any time soon. Luckily, Franco Manca is more traditional.

On this occasion I chose to try the Gloucester old spot ham with mozzarella, ricotta and wild mushrooms. Despite a mix up during the order it was a pleasant experience. If I was being picky, I would have liked the pizza to be cooked a minute more as the dough was slightly undercooked at the centre. Their sourdough crust is a major selling point and extra ingredients can sometimes take away from the main attraction. If I'm honest I prefer their tomato, mozzarella and basil pizza. Sometimes simple is best.

To quench my thirst I ordered a cider. It complemented the pizza well as it was light and refreshing. I recommend lemonade for those that do not drink alcohol. I particularly enjoy the glasses they use to serve drinks. Generally, I appreciate what the owners have strived to do. The look of the restaurant is modest yet entertaining with its open kitchen. Their desserts, however, are average at best. Personally, I would only order pizzas from this restaurant. The price is modest. Pizzas can range from £5.00 to £8.25. It is definitely value for money and in my opinion significantly better than other pizza chains such as Pizza Hut or Dominos Pizza. I can see why Franco Manca has had significant success in recent years. Their affordable tasty pizzas are the perfect solution for a casual unplanned lunch.
