Restaurant Review #16 - Nobu at Fairmont Monaco

I will continue my series of Monaco with Nobu. Located in the Fairmont Hotel, this chain of Japanese restaurants can be found all over the world. It still surprises me to hear that there is a stigma that surrounds Japanese food. Many still associate Japanese food with raw fish however it's complexity and elegance have made this cuisine become one of my favourites. Recently, Peruvian food has been fusing with Japanese food and this could be observed in Nobu. They combined traditional Peruvian ingredients, such as aji panca, in their dishes. The atmosphere in the restaurant in nice and you are able to sit by the sea if you wish. I started this meal with gyoza's which were cooked well although it did not have a particularly special flavour.



I then tried one of the specials, chicken with aji panca. I thought the dish itself was interesting although the portion was small and not particularly filling. Many high-end restaurants have small portions but the dishes are usually very rich and therefore satisfying. This was not filling and despite having nice flavours, it left me wanting more. I also tried their calamari which was cooked very well although similar to the last dish, the portions left more to be desired. In order to enjoy a good meal at this restaurant you are required to order multiple dishes, like tapas. I do not particularly enjoy this concept as it seems an additional opportunity to make more income. Nevertheless, we did have one final dish which was the california rolls.



The sushi was cooked well. A quality which I expect from a restaurant such as Nobu. However, it was not special, considering Monaco has very high standards, I expected more. The price was this meal was high but it felt less after winning some money at the casino. Nevertheless, I feel that Monaco has better places to offer and I would suggest trying other restaurants. Overall, Nobu is a good restaurant but not a special one.

Fun Fact: UNESCO has decreed that Japanese food is a vital part of Japan's cultural heritage and should therefore be protected. This was the second country to receive this accolade after France.
